What will I learn?
On completion of this course you’ll be able to:
- apply an understanding of how fluid properties, rheology and atomisation performance can have an influence on spray drying
- manipulate drying parameters to influence product microstructure, materials properties and quality parameters
- appreciate the hazards involved in spray drying and how to ensure safe operation
- recognise how spray drying processes can be scaled up and appreciate the possible pitfalls on scaling up
- understand how spray drying principles can be applied to the manufacture of real industrial formulated products for economic and better preforming processes as well as improved product performance and quality
- discuss how challenges are tackled across different industries
- choose and design appropriate equipment such as atomisers and towers for laboratory, pilot and production-scale spray-drying.

Fluidised beds are widely used in industry due to their characteristic fluid like properties of good mixing and heat transfer. Applications of fluid beds range from combustion in power stations, catalytic reactors to the engineering of particles via methods such as low density agglomeration and encapsulation.
This new course focuses on the use of fluid beds in particle engineering area and covers:
- the basic principles behind fluidisation
- the importance of particle properties
- the impact of bed design on the structure and optimal operation of fluid beds, both batch and continuous.
The course is grounded in practical experience gained across numerous industrial sectors by a range of speakers from academia, equipment manufacturers and end users. The scientific principles of fluid bed operation will be reinforced by a number of practical demonstrations which show the theory in practice.
The 2019 UKICRS Symposium and Industrial Workshop will be held in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at the Liverpool John Moore University. Dates are confirmed as 3–4 June 2019.
What will I learn?
This course covers the basic science and engineering of microencapsulation across a wide range of applications including the important stages of emulsification control, stability and release property control. While the majority of the course involves emulsions, multiple emulsions and particle coating are also included as well as details of the range of valuable characterisation tools and their applicability. The emphasis is on understanding the flow behaviour of the interaction of the various components in such complex systems. This should provide the basis for a rational approach to formulating and producing micro encapsulates to meet a range of needs.
In 2017 the course was fully redeveloped offering a programme of academic and industry cooperation taking delegates from the basic science through to manufactured products. The programme also includes interactive demonstrations, industry presentations and the opportunity for delegates to bring posters for discussion with the course cohort, speakers and PhD students.
On completion of this course you’ll have an understanding of:
- developing a rational approach to formulate or modify emulsions for optimal processing behaviour, and using available laws and scaling relations to predict behaviour
- the various methods of turning emulsions into encapsulates, including the process conditions that impact their final properties and behaviour
- selecting characterisation devices and defining measurement procedures for a specific application
- evaluating and interpreting experimental data.
In 2019, the 9th International Granulation Workshop will be taking place in Lausanne, Switzerland. The granulation conference is the place to showcase the latest in agglomeration, granulation and particle technology with attendance from a range of universities and industry worldwide.
